What is ‘discreet’ packaging and how to use it

A naughty package, expensive product, or medicinal goods – businesses tend to use discreet packaging to make sure that no one can glance at the outside of a box and guess what’s inside.

While it obscures what’s inside, it also makes it impossible for the viewer to identify the business, store, or person that sent it – whilst this may seem daft, it’s quite desirable for some goods.

What type of products use this form of packaging?

  • Medicinal brands and health products: many medical items come in concealed packaging in order to protect the patient’s privacy.
  • Adult products are the ones that are most frequently sent in covert packaging. Discreet packaging benefits stores with names that make it obvious they sell adult toys, apparel, or other paraphernalia, even just lingerie!
  • Luxury brands: ahigh-value item is less likely to be kept if it arrives at the incorrect destination or be taken by a dodgy courier if it cannot be identified throughout the shipping process.

What can you expect?

Discreet packaging often consists of a basic, plain box. Most use a solid colour such as white or black, because even using a block pink could make you stand out. Asda currently came under fire for choosing a bright yellow for their basic range, saying it could be deemed embarrassing.

You could argue that a simple, understated packaging design creates a base for an unforgettable unboxing, but this is just what’s on the outside. If you want to go the extra mile and make the inside the fun part, you can find out just how to ‘think on the inside of the box’ in our blog.
